What Is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine: Top 6 Principles
First – Do No harm (Primum No Cere)
This is pretty simple. We use safer and simpler approaches first whenever possible.
This may include diet, exercise, herbs, vitamins and minerals, homeopathy, physical medicine, IV therapy, acupressure points, or other supplements and techniques.
If you do have a health problem that requires drugs, diagnostic imaging, or surgery, relax – we are licensed to prescribe many of the most commonly needed drugs, such as hormones and order x-rays. We are also know when a referral to a specialist is needed.
We are primary care physicians so when you need it we will make sure you get it. Also, your doctor may be able to go with you to the specialist to make sure the important questions get answered and the answers are understood.
Second – Treat The Whole Person (Tolle Totem)
You are a whole person and your leg bone is connected to your hip bone. A hurt foot is going to affect how you walk. When we walk our spine ideally moves in a certain way and when we walk wrong our spine moves wrong. These effects will spread through the entire body because most the nerves from the neck down come out of the spine. Any odd torque on the spine can put pressure on the nerves just enough to affect you. This is why sometimes to fix a back we have to fix a foot. Let this go on long enough and we’ll be fixing more than just get your foot and back. And sometimes what a foot needs is more than a bone moved, it needs strong ligaments and proper hydration.
Third – Treat The Cause (Tolle Causum)
Yah! But what is the cause? You’ll be running in circles until you get perspective. By stepping back and taking a look at the whole person we begin to see the web that has no weaver, as Chinese medicine docs have called it. The web has no weaver because the web that has caught your health and is now holding it hostage, was made by no one. Yes, you need to take responsibility for your life, but you’re doing your best. The cause is beyond you and once someone find the door to your health you can walk through it. Until then you are lost in maze carrying around a bag of supplements hoping that at least one of them is working. Let a naturopathic doctor find the door to your health, let us untangle you from the web that is holding you back, that is holding you down.
Fourth – The Healing Power Of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)
Have you noticed all these principles are pretty similar? Natural medicine is simple, it’s an art and a skill that grow out of those who love life and live to serve. But! you need to be very well trained in the signs of a serious health concern that may even need emergency care or a referral until you are able to once again return to your naturopathi physician. Often time can heal a lot but make sure your not missing something because time can also work against you. Going to health food stores and trusting clerks to diagnose is a waste of your time.
Nature can heal you. This is functional medicine. It is beyond treating symptoms. When you tell us a symptom we feel your pain and understand what you are going through and are very much willing to help alleviate some of that suffering. So taking aspirin for a headache may be okay sometimes but in the long run it is working against you. Instead, you need to be empowered. Your body has an amazing vital source that if allowed to function properly can and will do what it is meant to do – live. Live life, don’t let it live you.
Fifth – Doctor As Teacher (Docere)
Lifestyle changes can be difficult. There is a lot to learn about holistic health so when you go to the supermarket or buy a new bed you can make the best choice. When you learn how to change your own life you can inspire others to change their own and the chain reaction continues.
Sixth – Prevention
It is much easier to prevent a disease than to cure a disease. That is why when I look at your lab tests or do your physical exam I am always looking for shades of gray and ways to prevent what may be coming. In my opinion, it is never too late but it is never too soon either. Using Applied Kinesiology we can ask your body what it needs. There is no such thing as a Prozac or Aspirin deficiency. Lets figure out what key nutrients and treatments are required to unlock your better health. Lets’ figure out why you are sick or why your back hurts and hopefully prevent some other problem.
